S. Hayes, in whose memory the library was erected; Miss Mary Lenox Kennedy, whose mother was a member of that fine old family so identified with the religious, literary, educational, philanthropic and civic life of New York City; Charles Clinton Marshall, whose ancestors have been in Dutchess county since Revolutionary days; G. Howard Davison, whose stock farm is famous for its horses, cattle and sheep:these are some of the "Millbrook Colony" to whom the town has proved attractive on account of its healthy climate and scenic beauty. The organization of the Methodist Episcopal Church of La Grange was effected July 14, 1849. The Dutchess County Genealogical Society was established in 1972 to help organize and direct genealogical work. The Legislature was in session at Poughkeepsie when the news of the surrender of Cornwallis was received, in October, 1781. Settlement in the southern part of the town began as early as 1754, and the names of Shear, Clapp, Brundage, Swade, Dean, Weeks and Townsend are recorded among the pioneers.
